What is algae ?
=>Algae are chorophyll - bearing , thalloid , autotropic and largely aquatic [ both fresh water and marine ]. They occer in varity of other habitatis : stones, soils and wood. Some of them also occur in association with fungi [linchen] and animals.
The form and size of algae is highly variable , ranging from colonial forms like Volvox and the filamentous forms like ulothrix and spirogya . A few of marine forms such as kelps , from massive plant bodies.
The algae repoduce by vegetative , asexual and sexual meth9od . Vegetative reprodution is by fragmentation. Each fragment develops into a thalls. Asexual reprodution is by the prodution of differnt types of spores , the most commen being the zoospores. They are f;agellated [motile] and on germination gives rise to new plant. Sexual reprodution takes place through fusion of gamets. These gametes can be flagellated and similar in size [as in ulothrix] or non flagellated {non motile} but similar in size as [as in spirogya]. Such reprodution is called isogamous . Fusion of two gamets dissimilar in size as in species of eudorine is termed as anisogamous . Fusion between one large non motile female gamete and a smaller, motile male gamete is termed oogamous.
USES OF ALGAE
Algae are useful to main in a varity of ways. At least a half of the totle carbon dioxde fixation on earth is carried out by algae through photosynthesis they increase the level of dissolved oxygrn in their immediat enviorment. They are of pramount improtant as primary producers of enegy rich compound which form the basis of food cycle of all aquatic animals. Many species of prophyra laminaria and saragassum are among the 70 species of marine algae amounts of hydrocollods [water holding substance] e.g algin [brown algae] and carrageen [red algae] which are use commercially. Agar one of the grow microbes and in preparation of ice-cream and jellies. Cholorella a unicellular algae rich in protine is used as food supplement even by space travellers. The algae are divided into three main classes:
=Chlorophyceae
=Phaeophyceae
=Rhodophyceae
